American lotus is the largest member of the Water-lily Family in North America. It grows naturally in quiet backwaters of the Mississippi River, and lower portions of the Minnesota River. It is also found in a few lakes in the Twin Cities region, where it prefers wind-protected bays and quiet water. It is perhaps our most spectacular native water plant.
